November 2008

Happy (or should I say Hoppy?) Frog Week to all you frog lovers out there!

The 1st-8th of November is Australian Frog Week, and here at the zoo we had some great activities, from pledging your commitment to saving frogs, a tadpole touch tank, meet a frog talks, tricky tadpole performances, frog chalk art and the beautiful ‘Frogology" photographs down the main drive of the zoo.

We have had some more exciting breedings here at the Zoo. Nearly all of our Southern Corroboree tadpoles have developed into tiny froglets, and the adults have been put into the fridge at very cold temperatures to cool them down before their summertime breeding!
Watch a video of how we are trying to breed these frogs here at the zoo

Here at Melbourne Zoo we have three species of Poison Arrow Frogs from South America. You can see two of these on display; the Blue Poison Frogs (pictured) in the Reptile House, and the Blue and Gold Poison Frogs in the World of Frogs.
There is a third species that we have in our off limits area, and these are called Splash Back Poison Frogs. These 5 frogs have started breeding and we currently have 9 very healthy tadpoles. Hopefully you will be able to see these frogs on display towards the end of the year!

Please also remember to go to the  Amphibian Ark website  and sign the online petition.
All signatures will make a difference!

Frog tip for the month- take shorter showers! Less water used at home, means more water for our frogs to live in for the future!

Don't forget....

'It seems to me that if you wait until the frogs and toads
have croaked their last to take some action,
you've missed the point.' Kermit the Frog
