Post-visit Action

Planting the 'seed of thought'

Students can take home a native grass species, Weeping Grass (Microlaena stipoides) to plant within their school yard, in order to raise awareness of Victoria's most endangered habitat throughout their own community. The students have the opportunity to let the zoo know where they have planted the native grasses, by returning their Grassy Gurus postcard. They will then be added to our growing Grassy Gurus interactive map, highlighting all the schools contributing to a growing habitat corridor throughout Victoria. The map will be going live on the website really soon!

Be a Guru back at school

Raise the awareness of native habitats, such as grasslands, back at school:

  • Petition to have a native garden within your school grounds
  • Undertake an audit on the different habitats available within your local community
  • Hold a fundraiser to help a local native species
  • As a class, think about joining a conservation group: e.g. Friends of the Eastern Barred Bandicoot
  • Give talks to other year levels on issues and actions that can be achieved at school
