Pet Enrichment

Princess Jarrah

Enriching the lives of animals is important for zoo animals as well as for your family pet. Here are some ideas you can try at home to enrich your pet's life:

  • Digging pit – encourage digging in a chosen location. You may like to hide bones, treats, or their favorite toys
  • Wading pool – many dogs love water. A children’s wading pool offers hours of enjoyment
  • Ice blocks - use an empty margarine container to make ice blocks with favourite treats or toys in them. This will create a challenge for your dog or cat
  • Treasure hunt – hide treats around the yard for your pets to find
  • Scatter - throw your dog's dinner around the yard
  • Boxes – these can be presented in many ways. Small boxes with food, large boxes as obstacles, boxes within boxes with toys inside. Your dogs will enjoy ripping them into hundreds of pieces
  • Viewing area – dogs love to see what is going on next-door. Cut peep holes in the fence or build a raised area your dog can sit on to see over the fence
  • Dog toys – Kong, Buster Cube, Home alone, Feeder balls

Ensure your dog's toys remain novel. Remove them after a day and give them again in one week so they remain new and exciting.

Please consider your dog’s safety and don’t give items which may cause problems if consumed. Ask your vet if you are unsure.
