Zoos Victoria – incorporating Healesville Sanctuary, Melbourne Zoo and Werribee Open Range Zoo – is involved in breeding and recovery programs in Australia and around the world to help ensure our endangered native wildlife exists into the future.
Melbourne Zoo is involved in the following wildlife conservation programs:
Sunshine Diuris Orchid (Diuris fragrantissima)
This program draws on the expertise of our horticultural staff in the propagation of the Critically Endangered Sunshine Diuris Orchid. The team is tackling the ever-increasing loss of Victoria's grassland habitat by restoring grassland remnants in an effort to retain the biodiversity supported by these ecosystems.
The Water Recycling Plant captures and treats wastewater from rainfall and Zoo operations and pumps recycled water around the zoo through 4km of pipes.
